《长干里》是姞文“秦淮故事”明朝四部曲《琉璃世琉璃塔》《歌鹿鸣》《朝天阙》《瞻玉堂》之后又一华语网络文学力作，讲述的是改革开放四十年中国发展道路、价值观念及实际成功经验，有机融合了宏观叙事的国家故事和微观具体的百姓故事，它娓娓告诉世界读者，中国今天的成就是新时代奋斗者挥洒汗水拼出来的、来之不易，并把人文精神放在首位争取不同读者的最大理解。

长干里：一部探索现代化与保护的小说

地球上到处都是现代化的问题，其中之一就是发展和保护之间的矛盾：一方面社会和经济需要基础化建设的发展，另一方面个人家庭和社团想要保护他们的传统个性空间。年有一部获奖专题电影《洗澡》，把这个矛盾通过北京的澡堂来反映，如果你喜欢这部电影，你一定会喜欢《长干里》。这本大部头长篇小说将类似问题集中在著名的南京一角，态度语调更加认真，有更多好看的细节和冲突，讲述得高明而成熟。

小说家姞文，年为孩子自南京来到加拿大，年开始写作，是著名网站爱奇艺的明星写手，“秦淮故事”系列网络小说是其招牌。她至今最为著称的是描绘家乡南京历史文化的“秦淮故事明朝四部曲”即《琉璃世琉璃塔》《歌鹿鸣》《朝天阙》《瞻玉堂》，广受欢迎好评，她因此被读者称为“南京的文化使者”。年7月她作为首位入驻作家加入了江苏网络文学谷，从而有了更大的发展提高空间。

《长干里》是她的新作，是江苏网络文学谷的第一部当代题材作品（长干里是一个古地名，大致位置在今天南京的中华门一带）。四百多页的小说中用的城市名是南都，但读者很快能感觉到这显然是代指南京，而反映的现代化发展和保护之间的问题则是大部分中国城市都经历面对的，尤其是在解放初期。小说的名字为今天南京的一个区域，故事地点则是一个叫“南都”的城市（南都和南京都是南方的都城之意）。姞文极为细致认真，为了书名《长干里》书名的英文翻译曾与我讨论几次，最后因其是一个地名决定音译Changganli。

位于长江三角洲上的南京，在中国历史文化上有极为重要的位置，自公元三世纪至年之间曾是多个王朝的首都，也长期是文化、教育、科研、政治、经济中心和交通要地，如今则是世界上最大的内陆港之一。《长干里》的故事，覆盖了年代经济开放之初一直到年的几十年，可以概述为：一部感人的历史长卷，讲述了五个长干里长大的年青人在渴望现代化与保护中华文化遗产之间几十年的矛盾纠葛。五个青梅竹马的少年分别成长为建筑师、副局长、记者、非遗传承人和开发商，个人的理想和现实，家庭和大众的问题，现代化与传统文化遗产的对抗矛盾，都通过这五个不同的角色展现得淋漓尽致。

如中国作家范小青（江苏省作协主席）所说，阅读《长干里》就象行走在长干里，“小说融文字的温度、情感的热度、故事的力度、精神的高度于一体，是一幅饱满纷繁的关于历史文化名城的历史、城墙史、老城保护史的恢弘长卷，情节跌宕起伏，故事曲折生动，人物命运牵肠挂肚，古往今来，涉及社会方方面面”。

故事是一个美满柔和的结局，说明了现代化要在重建和保护之间找到并保持最佳平衡，要考虑到不同角度立场的同等效力。同时，故事的结尾也开始了另一个长干里社区领导和居民们必须面对的争论，一个真实世界中的超现实提醒：社会冲突个体事件也许结束了，但是社会冲突永无止尽。

小说家姞文在最后第章中显示出她诗意的一面。美丽的莲花灯上粉色的花瓣徐徐绽放，富有哲理的诗歌引自林徽因：

CHANGGANLI:A Novel Approach to Modernization and Preservation Review

Issues surrounding modernization everywhere on the planet include the tensions and contradictions between the social and economic requirements of infrastructure development on the one hand, and the desire of individuals, families and communities to preserve the character of their traditional domestic spaces on the other. If you enjoyed the award-winning feature film “Shower” (Xǐzǎo 洗澡), which addressed this issue focussing on a traditional bathhouse in Beijing, you surely will enjoy reading Changganli, an epic novel that addresses a similar issue in a famous corner of Nanjing, but in a much more serious tone, with much greater detail and complexity, as can be conveyed only through full-fledged novel.

The novelist Jiwen, came from Nanjing, moved to Canada in for her son and only started publishing novels in , first in serialized format via the popular website iQiyi (www.iqiyi.com), then as hard copy novels in , and . She is best known as the network author of historical and cultural novels whose stories take place in Nanjing. Her ThePorcelain Tower of Nanjing (), Jiangnan Imperial Examination Hall (), Chaotian Palace ( ) and Zhanyuan Garden ( ) have been bestselling literary interpretations of Nanjing's history and culture, now available as a quartet under the title Qinhuai Series. She is known as a “devoted cultural ambassador of Nanjing”. In July of , she became part of the Jiangsu Network Literature Valley, which has given her more opportunity for improvement and development.

Her latest novel is entitled Changganli (well-known as the name of an ancient residential area, located just outside of Zhonghua Gate in today’s Nanjing), which became the first work of modern day fiction to be featured in the Jiangsu Network Literature Valley. Although it is written as a + page novel set in a city called Nandu, the reader quickly senses that it is a transparent reference to Nanjing and to modernization issues that have faced most major Chinese cities, especially since the early years of the People’s Republic. The novel’s very title is the name of a district in today’s Nanjing, and the story’s location is in a city called “Nandu” (=Southern Capitol), which is another way of saying “Nanjing” (=Southern Capitol). Jiwen asked me which is the best way to translate the title, Changganli, and after some discussion we decided that since it is a place name it should not be translated.

Situated in the Yangtze River Delta region, Nanjing has a prominent place in Chinese history and culture, having served as the capital of various Chinese dynasties, kingdoms and republican governments dating from the 3rd century to , and has thus long been a major center of culture, education, research, politics, economy, transportation networks and tourism, and is today the home of one of the world's largest inland ports. The story, which covers the period from the beginning of economic reforms in the 1980s to , could be summarized this way: A historical novel that explores the emotional journey of five young people who grow up in Changganli amid the struggle between the desire to enjoy the benefits of modernization and the need to preserve Chinese cultural heritage sites. The five youths grow up to become an architect, a vice-bureau chief in the local government, a reporter, a non-cultural heritage advocate, and a developer. The ideals and realities of personal, family and public issues and contradictions of modernization versus material cultural heritage protection are revealed and explored from these five diverse perspectives.

As one Chinese reviewer (Fan Xiaoqing, President of the Jiangsu Province Writers Association) recently put it, reading Changganli is like walking around the town: "The novel melds Ji Wen’s warmth of phraseology, passionate feelings, storytelling power and emotional grandeur into an organic whole.” This is an extensive depiction filled with the countless complexities of a famous city known for its rich cultural history, its renowned city wall and its old town preservation efforts, through a story that unfolds with a free-flowing series of ups and downs, a plot with lively twists and turns, and deep concerns about the fate of its characters, touching upon many aspects of social life from ancient to modern times.

The story ends with a happy and mellow awareness that enlightened modernization depends upon finding and maintaining an optimal balance between reconstruction and preservation, taking into account the equal validity of multiple perspectives. It also ends with the beginning of another controversy facing residents and community leaders of Changganli, a hyper-realistic reminder that in the real world, social conflict episodes may end, but social conflicts are endless.

The author Jiwen shows us in very last paragraph of the -chapter novel that she could be a poet as well as a novelist. On a colorful paper lantern is a beautiful painting of a pink lotus blossom with this philosophical inscription of Lin Huiyin:

Just a dazzling flash of light

like a little boat setting sail on a huge river

tactfully flowing with the billows of fate

awaiting gusts of wind to push it to far away places

a transient visitor in the universe

recognizing that this exquisite and easy-going cycle of life and death

this drifting itinerary is actually

is actually a beautiful, beautiful dream
